Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback." Empty Re: Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback."

I thought Tony's speech was poignant and moving, but I also got a whiff of self-pity that took me out of the moment.  I think the better play was to just say "Dak has earned the right to be the starter" in a locker room interview rather than standing at the podium giving what looked like a concession speech.

That aside, it was heart-wrenching to see a guy read the writing on the wall out loud in front of the whole world.  A man coming to the realization that he has aged out of being the center of activity isn't a pretty sight, and to see it play out publicly is beyond uncomfortable--especially if you are a man of a certain age who also knows what it's like to be involuntarily "aged out".  As our new member, Mike in Plano, always says, "Father Time is undefeated".  That day comes for all of us.

You have to wonder what, if Tony had been handed this team as a rookie, he might have been able to do with it.  At the same time, Dak has certain intangibles--leadership and poise--that Tony never seemed to have on his best day.  Maybe Tony has the better arm, but Dak seems to be the more complete QB, and his youth and running ability make him the man for the job today.

That's not to say that Tony won't yet get to make a contribution to this team, and by resigning himself to a backup role I wonder if he's truly getting himself mentally ready to play.  Of course it's a huge adjustment for him to make, so expecting him to do it immediately and with perfect grace is a lot to ask. Perhaps the best thing we can all do is appreciate the gesture, accept it in the spirit it seemed to have been intended, and continue the season by embracing Tony and what he has to offer.  We may need him before all is said and done, so getting him back in the fold is the most important thing right now.

Good post, as usual, '59. I like that you have the level-headed take. It's not about right or wrong, or good or bad. It is what it is.

I have been on some other Cowboys forums. This week has been some bizarre emotional break down for some of the fan base. Obviously, there would be those who celebrated over what sounded like Tony's concession. And then there are those calling out other fans for not praising Romo. And even others who have laid down their fandom calling for the organization's collective head for not allowing Tony a 'chance' to take his job back.

Would any other fan base be this polarized with their team at 8 and 1?

Probably not, no. It's a fun ride to be on right now. I'm glad this whole "controversy" is over and done, now, and we can kick back and watch things unfold, however they may!

Jerry is still saying he thinks Romo can play. I don't know if he's saying that to set him up to be used for "trade bait" in the offseason or what, but based on what I'm hearing, Jerry's still on the "Romo's got 5 years left..." train.

I'm not. He's got millions (probably) of dollars, a beautiful wife and kids, and he's been the starting QB for America's Team, probably one of the most prestigious positions in all of sports, for the past decade. I know it's hard to do when you've been doing it for so long, but I think Tony's at the point where he should hang up the cleats and pads and start a new chapter. Heck, it was hard for me my senior year of HS. I wanted to keep playing but knew I wouldn't. I can just imagine how difficult it would be at the pro level to make that decision, with everything that goes into playing the game. But I think it's time for Romo to seriously consider it.

Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback." Empty Re: Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback."

Romo is one more injury from voluntarily calling it a career.  But if you think the discussion is over, you're more than likely mistaken.  They've now in a position of ridicule for sometime.  I'm enjoying the season and will till the end.  Totally get that it appears that they've found the QB of the future.  But unless Dak delivers a SB this season, then I'll view this season as a failure, an opportunity squandered.  Had Romo been reinserted and they not won a SB this year, then people would be saying any number of things, that they blew it by changing back to Tony.  Jerry would be villified even further than normal and Jason would be hung in effigy.  Either you win it all with Dak or be ripped for the entire off season.

We have some tough games upcoming as is the custom the last half of the season.  December against our division.  We all know that it doesn't matter the record the games are tough and this year all members of the NFC East are more than capable of beating us.  It wouldn't surprise many of us that 3 teams make the playoffs.  Let's be fans of our team, enjoy the challenge and see where it takes us.

So while Tony has passed the baton the reality is that in Dallas the story will never really end.  I feel really bad about all of this knowing there is only one way out of controversy and that's by holding the trophy.  Now the optimistic side of me, loves the future especially if Jaylon Smith gets on the field.  I like this Anthony Brown a lot on the outside but believe we need 2 more CB's next season, a DE and a WR.  Seeing Wilson coming along at Sam is a good thing to see. Byron Jones is doing terrific considering you don't see many big plays with him back there and he'll only get better.  The D will improve and the offense will need a few new pieces.  Hopefully, Dak won't be a one shot wonder, he doesn't look the part, but neither did RGIII or the idiot up in SF.  We have to face that Witt will be the next shiny piece to leave, albeit kicking and scratching.  But with a line in place, Zeke and Dak, they can compete at that high level and get other opportunities.  But again, if they come up short with Dak under center, then it will be a squandered opportunity that many won't be happy about and I'll be one of them.

Well, I'm not sure it's "over", caddy. I think it may be over for this season. There's going to be a LOT of talk this offseason about what's going to happen with Romo. The Fox pregame show basically said he's "too expensive" to keep as a backup.

Jerry will probably want him to start. I don't know what Garrett is going to want.

I think a lot of that is going to ride on how the season ends.

Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback." Empty Re: Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback."

Post by Cowboy1959 Mon Nov 21, 2016 12:57 pm

Caddy, the way you've stated your expectations, you've set up a classic no-win scenario.

There are any number of factors that go into winning a Super Bowl. The fact that no team has won more than 6 out of the 50 that have been played, and the fact that even annual Super Bowl contenders don't win it all every year show what a difficult task it is.

To put this Cowboys' season on the QB--whether it's Romo or Prescott--is unrealistic and ignores so many other variables. It's almost as if your premise is that the Cowboys were going to win this Super Bowl had Romo stayed healthy. I can't imagine that being even close to a lock, considering Romo's rather meager playoff experience and results.

Going into this season, not too many people looked to Dallas as a league power, even the most optimistic of fans who believed that Zeke Elliott was the missing piece Romo needed to gun that offense. Heck, a lot of people weren't even on board with the Elliott pick in the first place, saying we blew it by not taking Jalen Ramsey or Joey Bosa or some other defensive player that would've given that side of the ball a little more juice.

The fact that the Cowboys are where they are is, to me, at least as much a result of Prescott being the man of the moment as anything else. I mean, how much better do you think that an aging, health-compromised Romo could be doing right now? Prescott has a 17-2 TD/INT ratio and a 67.7% completion rate. The only guy with a better TD/INT ratio is Tom Brady, at 16-1, and we know where he's going to end up 5 years after his career ends.

On top of that, Prescott has shown a great deal of poise in the pocket, and his leadership skills are unquestioned. He handled an emotional Dez Bryant at least as well--and probably better--than Romo ever has.

The fact that Prescott is 13 years younger (and healthier) is a huge factor in making plays. Sure, he may not be hitting all the passes Romo could, but are you so sure that Romo can still make those plays? I'm certainly not. And considering that Prescott seems eminently coachable and doesn't seem to repeat mistakes (something that cannot ever be said for Romo), we're still finding out what his upside is.

I don't know if the Cowboys are standing at 9-1 right now if Romo had started the season and played all the games. It's hard enough to do as it is, and to say that this could have been accomplished by two different guys on the same roster is a stretch. To be sure, this streak hasn't been all about the QB, but at the same time the QB is the guy who makes the team go, on a variety of levels.

Frankly, Romo's penchant for the high-risk play--and the uneven results he's gotten over the years--makes me think that this is probably a 7-3 team with him at the helm. I can't prove that, of course, but that would be my projection based on his past performance. And we'd be very happy with that, by the way. But 9-1 looks a whole lot better, doesn't it? It's not all Prescott, but can you parse out the percentage he contributes?

If we don't win the Super Bowl this year, or even make it there, I'm not going to spend a single second wondering whether Romo could've done better, unless Prescott goes out there in a critical game and flat out plays like a rookie and gets schooled. But right now the game hasn't proven too big for him, and unless and until we find out what his ceiling is it's not reasonable to put Romo back into the lineup on the assumption that he can be the QB he was even 2 years ago, much less 10.

Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback." Empty Re: Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback."

Post by Cowboy1959 Mon Nov 21, 2016 1:02 pm

And on my previous point about Romo's "concession speech" having a tinge of self-pity, I think Gil Lebreton of the FWST had a very interesting and accurate take on the theatrics around that very unusual press conference:

If you’ve noticed, whenever Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones ventures from his natural habitat, an ardent infestation of cameras and notepads follows his every move.

And Owner Jones almost always obliges, whether it’s saying that Troy Aikman "looks good in the shower" or that CAT scans show he has the "mind of a 40-year-old."

You can’t make this stuff up, and with Jerry the media doesn’t have to.

And thus, here was Jones last week suggesting that deposed quarterback Tony Romo was eager to accept any new role, including passing out the Gatorade.

As Jerry put it, "If we ask him to be the water boy, he wants to drown them with the water."
I get the owner’s point, but the notion of Romo fully embracing the role of sideline cheerleader is ludicrous. Jones demeans Tony just by saying it.

And then he added this gem:

"I think Tony has got five years left of really competing for a Super Bowl. I believe that strongly.

"We’re talking generic now," Jones said. "I have no plans for him not to be part of the Dallas Cowboys."

Five years? Romo has broken bones and been unable to finish three of the last five games he’s started, yet Jerry thinks Tony can quarterback until he is 41 years old?

Jones is right about one thing. Romo probably does have some football left in him. That seemed apparent during Romo’s emotional statement in front of the media last Tuesday afternoon.

It turns out, however, as reported by Albert Breer of MMQB, that Tony actually asked the coaches for a chance to compete to regain his starting job.

Whoa. Mr. Team Man was willing to upset the momentum of an 8-1 season and send Dak Prescott to the bench?

The coaches understandably refused because, well, the team is 8-1. What exactly did Romo think he would be able to improve upon?
I have no doubt there are Cowboys fans, including some among the local and national media, who watched Romo on Tuesday and went through a box of tissues. Through teary eyes, an NFL Network reporter suggested that the farewell speech was so eloquent, it would become Romo’s "legacy" in Dallas.

Maybe so. But Romo is going to have a hard time shaking the fact that is the highest paid player in franchise history ($127 million so far), yet produced only two playoff victories.

As I wrote Tuesday, once Jones and the coaches decided that Prescott is the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, there were only two ways that Romo could have handled his public response. The wrong way would have been to raise a stink and cry that it wasn’t fair. The other way was what he did Tuesday, by more or less nobly falling on his sword.

Either way, he wasn’t starting Sunday.

The public clearly bought into it, but it was because Romo said exactly what Cowboys fans wanted to hear.

Imagine, instead, if Romo had not said anything, and suddenly in the middle of Sunday’s game against the Ravens, coach Jason Garrett would have thrust Romo into the game?

Much of the crowd would have howled – howled! What’s Romo doing in there?

Romo chose, instead, to summon the media and control the message by reading his prepared statement, a narrative that painted him as the ultimate, unselfish company man.

Except he did ask coaches in the middle of an 8-1 season to let him try to win his job back, now, didn’t he?

Anybody else see the contradictions in that?

I’m not picking on Tony. I’m really not.

His speech Tuesday probably had a twofold purpose. It disarmed the growing public sentiment against him, and it served as a nationally televised "job wanted" ad for any teams that were watching.

Like his boss, the owner, said, Tony still has football to play. But it’s folly to think that a quarterback who’s been paid more than any Cowboys player in history, yet has won only two playoff games, deserves your tears and sympathy.

Cheer him. Support him. Wish him good luck in Denver.

But don’t cry for Tony Romo, though he wanted you to.

Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback." Empty Re: Romo on Dak: "He's earned the right to be our quarterback."

Well in Romo, I see a man who many years had to pull the team up to make 8-8. He willed us to win and in games several years, with teams that were going nowhere. I knew they'd go no where in the playoffs but we all like to see our teams get there. Their defenses were terrible for almost all of his years in Dallas. Offensively, it was up and down. 2007 was probably their best team or best chance but that got blown up with Terrell Owens dreaded high ankle sprain. We ran him and gimpy Terry Glenn out there and it was a joke. Barber ran well early in that playoff game, but they stopped that and forced us into tough down and distance. He was a nice runner for the thrills of his runs but w/o speed no one cared and did their best to take away the WR's. Pretty easy to defend without guys at full strength.

2014 was a year to contend but again that defense was awful and good teams were going to get the better of them. This year is our best team in the last 20 years, but the defense again is our Achilles, yet Marinelli's magic has done a phenomenal job, maybe with smoke and mirrors. They can't afford a single injury at this point on defense. Scandrick is struggling out there and won't attempt a tackle. So we have to be concerned with a defense without a pass rush. I've never seen a really good defense that lacked a pass rush. The Giants won 2 SB's with a terrific pass rush and an ok offense. Denver won last year with a great pass rush. Gotta have that to win a SB and where I think we'll come up short, but until then I hold my breath and hope the offense carries us. Tough game here Thursday!
