Sept 3 - First cut to the 53 - Thoughts Empty Sept 3 - First cut to the 53 - Thoughts

Hi guys! Thanks for the shout out LG, good to see you and your takes too.

Well today didn't go as I thought in some places but it's only the first swing at the 53. Claims to be made tomorrow.

First of all, I'm not over the signing of Sanchez. I'm trying to keep a nice dinner down. He's awful and will drive the faithful to drinking heavily and lots of screaming at the TV! He's been part of a few wins in his time but he's just not a play maker at the position. We'll hold our breaths on each and every throw. After all he doesn't know where its going, so how will we.

I was pretty surprised with a few cuts, in particular the non cut of JJ Wilcox and the cut of Deji Olatoye. Until last night where it seemed he was targeted he'd done a decent job out on the corner. Dax Swanson hadn't shown me much as a pure corner but certainly had some hops for a punt returner. I liked Olatoye's size and Swanson appeared small for the position. He did make a nice play in Thursday's game on a red zone pass.

I liked Okoye at DT/DE as a development type guy. Russell showed nothing in preseason against 2's and 3's. McAdoo flashed but an injury on Thursday knocked him out. I'm looking for any potential on edge rushers and Okoye at least showed possibility. Hoping we can get him to the PS, but I'm concerned someone will snatch him up. He made too many plays to go unnoticed. Guys like Tapper and Collins didn't show us much due to injury by comparison. They have more experience than Okoye. Street gone was a pretty easy call, showed nothing in 3 years.

Hoping Akunne & King will be considered and signed for the PS. They can make some tackles. I was surprised both Rod & Keith Smith made the first cut. Don't see that lasting too long. I believe Rod goes. Very pleased that Darious Jackson made it and he may be a solid compliment to EE down the road in two years specifically after Morris's deal is done.

I can see keeping Showers an extra day, but I wouldn't put Romo on IR with designation for return in 8 weeks. If he's ready in 6, I want him at the ready the sooner the better. We'd be very fortunate to be .500 with Dak at the helm. I don't see him being enough to put up all the points we'll need to win games. I think he'll do alright, but the difference between 3's and 7's may be the difference of W's vs L's.

I like the upside of Kavon Frazier in coverage way more than Wilcox. JJ's still not able to cover or tackle consistently after 3 years on the job. Olatoye surprised me as they were looking at him as both CB and safety.

Sad but I don't know that there's a OT any better on the waiver wire than Green. He concerns me that I'd consider moving Collins out and Leary into guard if need be. Gotta be better than Green!

I did think there was a possibility that Escobar would be released and Traylor might have made the 53 as a better option as a blocking TE. Neither Swaim or Escobar block all that well, challenged to set the edge. Escobar was a classmate of my youngest so we root for him, but he's not able to get on the field enough to make enough plays. They never used him to his skill set as a receiving TE. Good hands guy and tall, but they just don't put him out there enough to have an impact. Thought he'd be let go. Without Hanna they needed a blocking TE and may still look for one or bring him back.

Remember too, that in at least 4 weeks, another cut will be made to put Lawrence on the squad and who knows about Gregory. He'll be a mystery for awhile.

Sanchez ...... I'm going to make a drink for myself, some nice Bombay Blue and get an early start. Just having him on the roster scares me as I'm sure he'll blow a game all by himself if they're ever forced to put him in a game.

The only good thing about signing Sanchez is that they actually didn't trade for him like Elway hoped they would.

Here's hoping he never has to put on a helmet in a game this year.

I think if Jameill Showers had not played so poorly against the Texans he might have had a chance to stick around.  But he more or less played his way off the team Thursday night, so it was only a matter of time before his roster spot was taken by a better player/more pressing need.

Personally, I'd have rather gone with Austin Davis as our backup.  If I was the Cowboys' GM, I'd fire Jason Garrett for 2 reasons:  his risk-averse mismanagement of games, and his absolute incompetence in finding a decent backup QB.  There's no reason why a team coached by a guy who spent a dozen years in the NFL as a QB cannot find a backup who can play.

I think the Cowboys made a mistake not sending Romo to IR, and to me this is one more manifestation of their addiction to a guy whose health is becoming a progress-stopper for the Cowboys.  They are hoping against all logic that Romo is not only going to be back in 6 weeks, but that he'll be ready to take more NFL-level pounding.  It ignores his recent history, and is more of that "whistling past the graveyard" I discussed in another post.  Just one more consequence of the Cowboys' inability to find backup and developmental QBs.

It looks like they might have gotten lucky with Dak Prescott, but this organization's reliance on luck in finding a QB is pathetic.  Instead of doing the slow, patient work of finding and developing QBs, they're hoping to hit a gusher from a dry well.  That may be how Jerry made his millions, but it's not the way to win consistently in the NFL.

The biggest surprise for me in the final cut was J.J. Wilcox holding onto his spot by the skin of his teeth.  I'd have rather gone with Olatoye, who may have a bigger upside.  I think this was another of Garrett's risk-averse roster decisions, going with a known quantity over a question mark.  Hopefully Wilcox won't see the field that often in 2016.

Although I think that 2 FBs is extravagant (and very unlikely to be permanent), I do like the fact that they found a way to hang on to all of their HBs for now.  McFadden's return is going to require some decisions, and it feels to me like it'll either be McFadden or Dunbar who finds himself on the street.  Hopefully they can get some trade value for the odd man out.

Overall, the roster seems very reasonable, and I think you can win with those guys.  It would be nice if the Cowboys had one or two studs on the DL, but they'll have to try to win with quantity, not quality, and I think Marinelli is going to be rotating his guys all season long.

I don't know what's fair to put on Dak as far as the Cowboys' first-half record.  Obviously I'll be thrilled with 4-4 or better, but is that realistic?  We'll have rookies at QB and RB (though I expect Alfred Morris to get a lot of carries early in the year), so it's a lot to expect the Cowboys to come shooting out of the gate.  I think 3-5 keeps them in the playoff hunt, especially in the East (remember when 9-7 used to only be good enough for 4th place in that division?), but I think the worst case scenario would be for the Cowboys to be hovering around .500, bringing Romo back, and losing him again to injury.  They need to keep him out until he reaches a point where he can stay on the field once he returns.  Anything other than that and this is going to become another lost season.

Let the games begin.

Romo at this point needs to just hang up the cleats and spend time with his wife and kids. At this point, I'm genuinely concerned for the guy. I took a blind side shot in a game in HS one year, and I'm still having lower back issues because of it. And I'm almost 40.

Some guy actually wrote him "an open letter", basically telling him the consequences if he's not careful about his next decision.

And I know it's nothing to aspire to, but remember the Giants won a Super Bowl after going 9-7 in the Regular Season.

I don't get the 2 FBs, other than keeping them around to delay the choice on D.Lawrence's return???

Now Gregory could come back by week 5, too. There is still a lot more shake up to go for the next few weeks.

The FBs are primarily special teamers, so they'll probably see more action there than in the backfield.

I think this roster is definitely a long way from being a finished product, and we might not see a settled lineup until deep into October.

I think keeping Romo on the 53 is a mistake, personally, because it prevents the Cowboys from accepting reality, and increases the risk that they will rush him back into action before he's ready, like they did last year. I'm ready to ride Dak as long as necessary, even at the expense of this season, if it gets him ready to be the Cowboys' QB of the future. More whistling past the graveyard, if you ask me.

One thing that surprises me is that the Cowboys have not been as aggressive as I thought they'd be in churning the bottom of the roster. I figured spots 45-53 would be more up for grabs than they appear to be. Aside from shuffling a few deck chairs on the PS, they've not brought in any talent to upgrade the main talent. I find that curious.

I'd have to agree about keeping Romo on the 53. But I think that shows just how "in love" with Romo Jerry really is.

I'm sure Romo's a great guy, and I know how much it hurts to give up playing a game you love, but Romo should be on IR right now (the one where you're off the roster but still part of the team -- whatever it's called).

I don't know if they could put him on PUP. He should really consider calling it a career, and hanging it up. I mean, he got to do what very few QBs can say they've done -- be the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys.

I am not sure what was more disappointing...seeing Wilcox on the 53 or not seeing Romo on the IR.

Whistling past the graveyard on Romo for sure. A certain indication that Jerry and Tony will both push their luck.

Wilcox is just another indication of the risk aversion beleaguering this coaching staff. I hear coaches like that known over the unknown. I suppose I can relate. I've managed salespeople and software developers. If I had a salesperson not showing a high ceiling, I was quick to move on. With developers, not so. I suppose as the job gets more complicated and the more moving part their are, the simpler to manage the variables. Personally, though, as a fan, Wilcox has no ceiling, and I'd just rather see them move on to the lesser know Frazier (or anyone else for that matter).

Now that I think about it, what a weird combination - Garrett and Jerry. One who wont run another play to get a game winning fifty-some yarder a little closer for fear of a negative play, and one who would bet the farm on a dry well. They don't balance each other out. I'd like to see Garrett have a little Jerry in him.
